Saneinte Health Hut Renovation

Year: 2016
Country: Senegal
Project Investment: $3,624.77
Project Status: Funded
Sector: Health

Project Launch: 7-1-16

Over the last 20 years, the health hut in Saneinte has slowly deteriorated. Without running water, women in the community feel uncomfortable giving birth at the facility, forcing them to travel long distances to the neighboring health post to receive proper care. This project will provide important renovations to the health hut, such as running water, a new roof, repaired toilets and showers, and a new maternity/birthing room. Additionally, a community garden will be created to grow produce to reduce malnutrition and to serve as a revenue generating activity to finance future renovations. Once remodeled, the space will provide a more safe, sanitary and supportive environment to cater to the health needs of the community.

Final Report: 5-22-17

There have been 6 women who have given birth in the village last season, all of whom attempted to give birth at the health facility. Four women were able to successfully give birth there, while the other two had complications that required them to go to another more advanced facility. Women feel safe and comfortable delivering their children in the health hut. The health hut has also gained a lot of credibility with men in the village. The construction of a new room has allowed for the health hut to have a community meeting space. With the new renovations, the trained health worker is also spending more time there. She often spends a few hours a day sitting at the health hut for consultations. The hut's garden is also coming along nicely with its 6 plots featuring pepper, hibicus, squash, turnip, carrot, okra, and cabbage.
