Project Launch:

Camp GLOW 2010 was a huge success this year! Thanks to Kids to Kids 28 girls aged 10-15 from all around Belize were able to spend 5 days at Camalote Camp learning about important health issues and how to successfully pass their knowledge on to other members of their various communities. By being around new kids their own age, the girls became more outgoing and more confident in who they are. They also learned new skills that could help them improve community clubs in their own villages that will be carried with them upon leaving Camp GLOW. Although only 28 girls were able to attend, there is hope that the skills they learned will be put into effect upon returning home where they can pass on what they learned to all the other girls in their villages empowering each and every girl to be true to who they are, and make a difference in their community.   Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) is an annual week-long leadership camp for girls from all around Belize. The purpose of Camp GLOW is to present girls with new opportunities outside of their communities, to meet new friends of different backgrounds and cultures, and to inspire them to become positive and motivating role models to their peers. This life changing event is brought back to the communities of the campers as they continue to share and spread the knowledge and skills they have learned in camp with their peers. Camp sessions are taught by leaders throughout Belize and volunteers with the Peace Corps serving in Belize. During Camp, all activities and sessions point to one of the three main goals of Camp GLOW. These three goals focus on 1) self-esteem, 2) self-expression, and 3) self-reliance by presenting campers with new ideas, activities and challenges that enable them to think different and develop their futures. The girls discover value and potential within themselves to have bright futures, and they are encouraged to develop a new level of tolerance and appreciation whilst in a multicultural, multilingual environment.
