Project Launch: 2-11-15
The community of El Rosario has high deforestation rates and very limited economic opportunities. In order to combat deforestation, community members have started using bamboo as an alternative to wood as it is readily available, grows fast and is a more eco-friendly option. This project will lead to the formation of two bamboo start-up business that will make woven baskets and decorative flower vases to sell to tourists and community members. Each product will be engraved with the community’s name for branding purposes. Participants will receive basic business and entrepreneurship training, as well as materials and equipment, such as knives, paint, and paintbrushes. Community members will attend environmental workshops where they will learn about the environmental benefits of bamboo.
